Saida is a coastal city located in the eastern Mediterranean, the third largest Lebanese city after Beirut and Tripoli according to the population, the capital of the Governorate of South Lebanon, and one of the oldest cities in the world that is still inhabited today.
It is located in the South Governorate, of which it is the capital, on the Mediterranean coast. Tyre to the south and Lebanese capital Beirut to the north are both about 40 kilometres (25 miles) away. Sidon has a population of about 80,000 within city limits, while its metropolitan area has more than a quarter-million inhabitants.
Saida did not regain its political and economic importance until Prince Fakhruddin Al-Maani II annexed it and gave it an urban and economic renaissance, and it later became the center of the Sidon province for about a century, before it relapsed after Ahmed Pasha Al-Jazzar moved the center of the province to Acre, as well as due to several earthquakes.
